The authors Purpose
The Fellowship of the Ring is a book written by JRR Tolkien. This book was published in 1954 and during this time Tolkien would tell some of these stories from his mind to his children. At this time Tolkien was a professor at a college. Tolkien mainly used Old norse and Middle english tales to tell the stories. Tolkien loved writing these books as he wrote three others, as the hobbit came before. Tolkien created his own language that was beautiful in its own way. He created Quenya and Sindarin, and these languages are used heavily throughout the tales of middle earth.
The main character frodo baggins was really just a random name. It actually wasn't easy to pick either he almost wrote the whole book until he decided to change the name, for the third time. Now Frodo was a very brave hobbit and stumbled into his uncle's footsteps very easily.
A lot of the book does not have anything to do with the film. The director Peter Jackson changed a lot of it. Tolkien does relate frodo to Bilbo by making them have almost the same ties to the ring in the book. In the beginning Bilbo gives frodo the ring and Frodo leaves to go to Mordor to find out what exactly the ring is.
Before writing the books John Ronald Reuel Tolkien fought in WWI in the battle of the Somme. Which this battle had over 1.1 million casualties. This could be a show of immense bravery that Tolkien showed and may have helped him develop some of his characters. Tolkien after returning home from the war started a family and became a Oxford Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon. This job then inspired him to created some of the amazing tales of middle earth that we hear today.
